ARC Partners with
Buckeye Protective Services to Provide ARC Dealers with a Superior
Video Monitoring Package
________________________________
“Wanting the very best service available in this
video specialty for ARC dealers, we decided to partner with
Buckeye without hesitation.”
_________________________________
“We’ve known
Ray Jones and Richard Jacobsen, the owners of Buckeye Protective
Services, for many years,” said Jim Osborne, ARC Managing Partner,
“and we’ve have worked together on a variety of projects and in
security industry associations over the years. They’re professional
and service oriented. I’m confident that our dealers will be served
very well.”
Question:
Why doesn’t ARC offer video monitoring directly from the ARC
U.L. central? That’s a good question, and the answer is clear and
easy and one that we talked about in our last newsletter.
ARC focuses only on two key areas: alarm monitoring, dealer
support services. We are “Alarm Monitoring Specialists” as we
clearly state, and this is our strength and our purpose. While
others may choose to be a “Jack of all trades,”we choose alarm
monitoring and support for our dealers. Technology has changed,
changed rapidly, and continues to change. Many areas have become
specialty areas calling for special expertise and much more. When we
find such a specialty that’s attractive and important to ARC
dealers, we partner with the best.
For more on our focus and commitments, please see our previous
newsletter on our website at News (PDF, top right on this page).
(Editor’s
Note: Meet and talk with the experts from Buckeye at the 2009
ARC Dealer Update at the PACE show and in the Fall at the ARC Dealer
Meeting, and look at the various video monitoring options. If you
are interested now in the ARC-Buckeye Video
Monitoring Program, contact Jim Osborne, Sr., at ARC.)

U.L. Verifications:

ARC's U.L. Certificate #: S8196 (UUFX)
Tip: ALWAYS
verify that a central station claiming to be U.L. certified is
actually certified and holds a current certificate. Some central
stations CLAIM to be U.L. and are not certified at all. Placing accounts
in such a central can spell big trouble for subscribers or dealers who
require a U.L. central. EASY VERIFICATION: Go to:
www.ul.com and click on
Certifications or "Online Certifications Directory". If you have any
doubts, telephone U.L. and ask (website should open in a new browser
window).

ARC & the BOLD Virtual Disaster Recovery Center
An overwhelming disaster? We’ve got it covered…
Constant “Hot Backup”: ARC has arranged to network
our Manitou Automation System (provided by Bold Technologies) with
the Bold Virtual Disaster Recovery Center in Colorado. This system
provides a constant “hot backup” between ARC’s servers in Ohio and
the disaster center’s servers in Colorado. Should ARC be hit with a
natural disaster (tornado, fire, flood, etc.) we can divert our
receiver and voice lines to the disaster center. Then, alarm
responses are handled from a participating central station backup
facility. At this time we anticipate having arrangements with
centrals in both Maryland and Louisiana. What this means is full
backup service that is secure and goes far beyond other backup
methods.
The Shift: When a disaster occurs and the lines are
transferred, the personnel at the backup central station location
would start monitoring all systems normally monitored by ARC. ARC
would then send several key personnel to the backup central station
for ongoing monitoring services until the disaster has dissipated
and normal monitoring at ARC is restored. The same would hold true
in the reverse case. Should a disaster occur in one of the other
participating central stations, ARC would activate our internal
backup center and start monitoring their systems until their
monitoring capability is restored.

Redundancy:
This program is only for disasters which are so severe that ARC would
have to evacuate the facility. Internally we have a Manitou Tertiary
System (3 main servers), per UL specifications. In addition, we have
redundant receivers always active in hunt-group and ring-no-answer
configurations. As long as we have phone lines and T1 circuits, we are
in operation.
ARC Disaster Recovery Central: ARC is establishing a special
Disaster Recovery Central (D.R.C.) within the ARC U.L. monitoring
facility. In cooperation with Bold Technologies, ARC will provide backup
disaster monitoring for other central stations using Manitou and
participating in the Bold Virtual Disaster Recovery Center program. ◙

BULLETIN: ALERT
DO NOT
USE CID OR OTHER DTMF FORMATS
Based upon
what we have been made aware of and considering the facts, ARC recommends that you do not use Contact ID or other DTMF formats in
your panel communications. It is recommended that you use the slower
Pulsed Formats such as 3/1, 4/2 and SIA.
A good number of telephone carriers are now or soon may be using Voice
Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) for part of their transmissions
between their central offices. In an article written by Joan and
David Engebretson titled A Gathering Storm (published on SDM’s
website July 29, 2004) they discuss the problems that have already
occurred and what potential problems lie ahead. They suggest
solutions, too.
At ARC we have already seen that CID does not transmit reliably
on VoIP.
This is why VoIP and other emerging technologies were the main
topic of the ARC Dealer Meeting on December 9, 2004 and followed up
in 2005, 2006, and will continue to be addressed. During this
meeting and since then we have introduced available options
at ARC for dealing with this and other technological changes.
